a day for this.
Lost Sock Memorial Day falls on May 9 each year. It is an unofficial observance for remembering missing socks and making peace with the unmatched ones left behind.
Our memorial is imaginary. The excuse to wear two different socks is available to everyone. Here, we mark the day with a little ceremony and a thoroughly unreasonable amount of respect for knitwear.

These are things to do wherever you are, whenever you have a moment. There is no live event to catch and no one checking your shoes.
Dress for the occasion.
Wear a deliberately mismatched pair. If anyone notices, explain that you are attending a memorial. Allow them a moment to process the socks.
Read a few words.
Visit the collection and choose a tribute. Read it to yourself, or to someone who made the mistake of asking what you were looking at.
Remember one of your own.
Give a missing sock a name and tell us what made it worth keeping. The tribute form takes a few details; you can ask us to help with the obituary.
Give the survivor a future.
Let an odd sock join a new pair, become a puppet, or take up dusting. A change of career may be just what it needs. There is no obligation to throw it away.
We remember a sock that asked for little, went everywhere with us, and left without providing a forwarding address.
