Lost Sock Memorial Day falls on May 9 each year. It is an unofficial observance for remembering missing socks and making peace with the unmatched ones left behind. Calendar sites also list it as National Lost Sock Memorial Day or National Lost Sock Day. It is not a public holiday. Nothing closes, and nobody gets the afternoon off to look behind the dryer.
Nobody knows who started it. Calendar sites disagree about when it began, and Holiday Insights, after looking, found "no one brave enough to claim responsibility." Nobody has explained the choice of May 9 either. Our theory committee has views, none of them admissible.
Our memorial is imaginary, and it did not invent the day. Anyone may observe it. Here, we mark it with a little ceremony and an unreasonable amount of respect for knitwear.

Wear a deliberately mismatched pair. If anyone notices, explain that you are attending a memorial. Allow them a moment to process the socks.
Visit the collection and choose a tribute. Read it to yourself, or to someone who made the mistake of asking what you were looking at.
Give a missing sock a name and tell us what made it worth keeping. The tribute form takes a few details; you can ask us to help with the obituary.
Let an odd sock join a new pair, become a puppet, or take up dusting. Several have found dusting more rewarding than feet. There is no obligation to throw it away.
We remember a sock that asked for little, went everywhere with us, and left without providing a forwarding address.
