Lost Sock Memorial Day is observed annually on the ninth of May. The Memorial holds a reading of the year's tributes and the grounds stay open an hour later than usual.

Prevention
Most losses occur between the machine and the basket rather than inside the drum. The Memorial keeps a short list of measures that appear to work, including mesh bags and washing pairs clipped together.

The Memorial accepts tributes year-round. Entries are read by a person and published in the order they are received, usually within two weeks.
Write about the sock, not the machine. Exact dates are welcome but an approximate year is enough. Keep it kind to the sock; the partner is often still in the drawer and may read this.
Tributes that name a person unkindly, or that turn out to concern a glove, are returned with a note.
