Room 214 was a bamboo-blend sock in bottle green, bought in 2022 because the packet said bamboo and that seemed like the right direction to be going in. It was soft, a little shiny, and prone to static in the dryer.
In August 2025 it went on a weekend away. Two nights at a hotel by the coast, booked months earlier and described afterward by everyone involved as just what everyone needed. There was a pool nobody used and a breakfast everybody talked about.
It remained at the hotel. The room had been checked carefully before departure. This consisted of looking at the bed and saying, "Got everything?"
The loss was not discovered until the suitcase was unpacked nine days later, which is its own kind of review of the weekend. By then the room had been cleaned and slept in by at least four other guests. A call to the front desk established that lost property is kept for thirty days, and that it held, that week, eleven phone chargers and no socks.
We hope it got a late checkout.
