Athletic White, No. 3 came in a six-pack of plain white sports socks in 2022. The number is a courtesy. Nobody could tell the six apart, and J. did not try. They went to the gym, to five-a-side soccer on Thursdays, and under work shoes on days when nothing else was clean.
Six identical socks are a sensible system until one goes. Then there are five. Five is an odd number, and a sock drawer will point out an odd number every morning until you deal with it.
J. noticed in April 2025. Working backward took most of an evening. The last certain count was in September, before a week away. A photo from a match in October shows a pair of white socks, but nobody could say which ones. The loss was eventually dated to October 2024, on evidence nobody would accept in court.
It has never been established which sock was lost. By agreement, it was No. 3.

Now worn in rotation with a spare that does not quite match. J. says the difference only shows in certain light, and the light at five-a-side is not that light.
