The Gray Cushioned Left was bought in the spring of 2021 for a hiking trip in the Ozarks. M. bought boots, a water bottle with a carabiner on it, and six pairs of cushioned socks. Then the trip was canceled. The boots went into the closet. The socks went to work.
For five years the Left did the commute most days. Parking garage, elevator, a carpeted office, and a standing desk that was mostly used for sitting. The cushioned sole was designed for rocky trails. It spent its career on carpet tile and never once complained.
It was a left sock in the strict sense. The heel had worn to the shape of one foot, and on the right foot it felt wrong enough that M. would notice by lunch.
On January 19, 2026, it went into a warm load with two bath towels. The towels came back. They have been questioned separately, and their stories match.
Next of kin
Its right, and five other pairs of gray cushioned socks that are, to anyone outside the household, identical. M. can tell them apart. Nobody has asked how.
The trip
Has not been rescheduled. The boots are still in the box.
