Left on Read arrived on a birthday, wrapped around a bookstore gift card. The gift card got a proper thank-you. The socks, cream with tiny books printed all over them, went into a drawer.
Their new owner had been very clear that they wanted books. They came around to the socks eventually, on a cold night in the first winter, and after that the pair was reserved for bed.
Together the pair accompanied the first forty pages of several ambitious novels and the entirety of a much less ambitious one. The household declines to name it.
Left on Read was last seen between the bed and the wall, in the dark gap where bookmarks and one earbud also live. Moving the bed to look for it became a task for the weekend, then a reason to wait until the room was repainted. The room has not been repainted.
