The Emergency Sock went into a desk drawer in 2017, put there by someone who had once spent an entire working day with one wet foot and did not intend to do it again. It was a red wool-blend pair, rolled together. The drawer also held a spare phone charger, a sewing kit from a hotel, two painkillers in foil, and a stapler that belonged to someone else.
It waited seven years. In that time the office was redecorated twice, the drawer moved desks once, and the phone charger stopped fitting any phone in the building. The socks stayed rolled up and ready.
On a Monday in October 2024 it rained the kind of rain that comes up off the sidewalk. Its owner stepped in a puddle at the bus stop, felt the water arrive, and thought of the drawer for the first time in years.
The drawer was opened. Only its partner was there.
Nobody knows where the other one went, or when. The cleaners were asked, and so was the owner of the stapler. Neither could help.
