A lost sock obituary Half of the Airport Pair
2023 – 2023
Est. March 2023. Last seen April 2023.

In March 2023 S. flew home to Reykjavík through a connection the airline had described as comfortable. At the transfer desk S. learned that the bag had taken a different connection. S. had a passport, a phone charger, forty minutes, and the socks they were standing in.
The replacement pair came from a shop at the departure gate, the kind that sells neck pillows and chocolate bars the size of a paperback. It cost eleven euros. It had no brand, a slightly uneven toe seam, and a cardboard tag that said COMFORT in four languages.
It was worn for six days while the bag was located, redirected, lost again, and finally delivered by a driver who asked S. to sign on a screen that did not work. For those six days it did everything asked of it. It was the only sock S. had.
The bag came home in April. The pair went into its first wash that same week, along with everything that had been in the bag, and only one of them came out. It holds the shortest tenure in the register, and possibly the most useful.

Its partner now lives in S.'s hand luggage, in case.
