Toe Seam was the sock with the seam. Every sock has one, but this one sat across the top of the toes at an angle nobody could fix, like a ridge in a mattress. N. bought the pair in 2013 and noticed on the first day.
Its partner had a perfectly ordinary seam. N. wore them together anyway, so one foot was always fine and the other was always slightly wrong. N. says that is also a fair description of most weeks.
Most people would have given up on it. N. turned it inside out, which helped for a week. Then N. mended it, which moved the seam without improving it. For eleven years it went back into the drawer after every wash, and came out again on mornings when N. was running late and grabbed whatever was on top.
It was not a good sock. It was always there, and a sock that is always there is hard to argue with.
In February 2024 N. realized it had been a while. The drawer was searched, and so was the machine. Its absence was felt mainly in the toes, as relief, and N. is not proud of that.
