The Christmas Sock came from a supermarket in 2014, in a cardboard sleeve with a reindeer on it, for less than the sleeve looked like it cost. It was red and green acrylic, and it made a faint crackle when you walked on carpet.
It was worn eleven times, all of them in December. For the other fifty weeks of the year it lived in a shoebox in the attic with the tree lights, an angel with one wing, and a string of tinsel nobody likes. The household now believes that shoebox was the safest arrangement it ever had.
Its duties were light. It came down with the decorations, went to the school play and Christmas morning, and went back up the ladder by New Year.
In 2025 it missed the ladder. On January 2 it went into a mixed load with the dish towels and a sweater somebody had been given, and at the folding it was not accounted for. The shoebox went up without it.

Its partner, which the Ardleys have kept and will wear alone this December. They considered pairing it with an ordinary black sock and decided that would be worse.
